Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases are at epidemic proportions.  Thirty years ago there were two major STDs - syphilis and gonorrhea; today there are more than thirty.  One out of five Americans over the age of 12 has genital herpes (Fleming, D.T. et al. Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 in the United States, 1976 to 1994. New England Journal of Medicine (N.E.J.M.), Oct. 16, 1997: p. 1105)), one out of four sexually active teens contracts an STD every year (Alan Guttmacher Institute, Facts in Brief/Teen Sex and Pregnancy 1999: p.1), and in a 1998 Rutgers University study, among 608 sexually active female students followed for three years, nearly 60 per cent had Human Papilloma Virus infections (Natural History of Cervicovaginal Papillomavirus Infection in Young Women, N.E.J.M., Feb. 12, 1998, Vol. 338;7: p.423).

Current "wisdom" holds that "safe sex" is the answer.  However, a report by the National Institute of Health (7/01) reveals that condoms have no clinical effectiveness for most major STDs, including genital herpes, human papilloma virus (HPV), chlamydia, trichomoniasis or syphilis

LIFENET is answering the widespread ignorance on this issue with a talk based on the Medical Institute for Sexual Health's (www.medinstitute.org)  slide presentation "Sexual Health Today".  Using the latest clinical studies, this presentation gives the truth about STDs.  The upbeat message is: you can protect yourself, through abstaining from sex until marriage, and remaining sexually faithful within marriage.
